Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her mother was her grandmother. She grew up as an only child. Scott went to an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. The hope was to become a English High School teacher. However, her dream was ended when, after three years of studies and as a teachers aide she dropped out of the college. She began her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her own work in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Through the Roots show, she revealed herself as an artist. The show led to collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She gained more knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway the musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
